Anthony Joshua continued to prove he’s an absolute beast of a heavyweight champion, with a 7th round knockout of game challenger Alexander Povetkin.
The world title bout at Wembley Stadium was competitive throughout, until Joshua managed to hurt the Russian just after the fight had progressed into the second half. Povetkin was dropped with a left hook, and in all sorts of trouble when the champion jumped on him once more to ruthlessly finish him off.
Povetkin had started well, using good head movement to get inside Joshua’s reach advantage and unleash fast punches, even making the Brit stumble toward the end of the opener. The challenger continued to hunt with powerful overhand rights and a dangerous left hook, but Joshua weathered the storm and grew into the contest the longer it went.
The conclusion came in round 7. Povetkin, knocked down in his own corner, showed incredible heart and spirit to try get up but was in no position to continue with Joshua at his brutal best and eager for the spectacular knockout.
